About the event
The Poetry Programme
A new series of the Poetry Programme begins on RTÉ Radio 1 on Sunday 11 October at 7.30pm. In the first programme, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, former Ireland Professor of Poetry, tells presenter Olivia O’Leary about finding a number of her husband Macdara Woods' poems on his computer following his death in 2018. She reads two poems from Last Poems and Two Tales from Co. Meath, published by Cyphers, including a short and humorous poem called ‘Schroedinger’s Cat’. You can listen to a short clip here.
Eiléan also reads two poems, 'Intimations' and 'Key-Ring' on the programme, which also features Macdara reading one of his poems in an archive clip from 2016, when he was a guest on the Poetry Programme. The upcoming episode on 11 October also features Grace Wilentz, who is publishing her debut collection with the Gallery Press. She talks with Olivia about growing up in New York, her Jewish background, getting into poetry, and the loss of her parents when she was young. The programme ends by remembering the late Derek Mahon. Later in the series, you can look forward to hearing from poets including Maria McManus, Michael O'Loughlin and Doireann Ní Ghríofa, and items on haiku and on a new series of films featuring some of our newest poetic voices.
